Michael Beckstrand - Mixed-Methods Research Associate, Research Support Services, LATIS - College of Liberal Arts
Michael Beckstrand, PhD, serves as the Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research Associate with CLA LATIS’ Research Support Services and provides direct consultation services including: research design and methodological problem-solving; technical support of qualitative and quantitative research software, such as Atlas.TI, NVivo, and Stata; and digitization, management, and curation of qualitative data from text to images and audio.
Michael Beckstrand completed his PhD in Political Science from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and attended the Consortium for Qualitative Research Methods’ Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research. His dissertation, entitled “Recommendations, Rhetoric, and Reporting: State and NGO Behavior in the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights” relied heavily upon textual analysis of official reports, policy briefs, and statements of government and nonprofit officials. Further, Michael taught undergraduate and graduate research methods in the Political Science department at Syracuse, as well as an interdisciplinary honors research methods seminar for all of the social sciences. He served as Director of the Conflict Management Center of Syracuse’s Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration, an outreach and professional development center of the research institute. He received his bachelor’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies as well as Political Science from St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN. Originally from Elk River, MN, Michael lives in St. Paul with his wife Kate and son Peter.
